Wildwood

We are one week into the our longest read aloud yet - Wildwood by Colin Meloy.

I'm anticipating chipping away at this book for the rest of the month.  So far, we've made it through 120 pages of this ginormous 541 page book.  It's a tough read aloud for me.  Long sentences.  Rich vocabulary.  Very detailed visual descriptions.  I'm continuously tempted to stop reading aloud to discuss definitions and references, but I think it will break the flow of the story and it will also mean doubling the time it'll take for us to finish this book.  Tried putting the book down in favor of a different choice but both boys demanded we continue.

My boys love this book.  The idea of a magical "Impassable Wilderness" right next to a mundane modern city delights them.  They like the main character, Prue, well enough.  But it's her sidekick, Curtis who really captures their sense of humor and imagination.  My seven year old, E, has been acting out the parts of Curtis as I read to them.

Has anyone else picked up this book?  Any opinions or comments on it?  We'll be working on it for another 3 or 4 weeks.  Would love to hear from anyone else who has read or is reading this book.

  1. This looks right up our alley! I'll have to check it out.
Our current read aloud is D'Aulaires Book of Greek Myths. The girls are gobbling it up and it is filling a hole in my education since the years my friends all learned Greek mythology I was stuck in the local Catholic school learning the history of the Church.
