Living in a House of Cards
This shouldn't be such a big surprise. But this morning, it suddenly dawned on me that I'm living in a house of cards.
A big new venture - opening up my own shop. Exciting. Terrifying. Exhausting. And today - a big scheduling headache. I had everything all arranged. Drop boys to school. Big one picks up little one at dismissal. Babysitter shows up shortly after. Meanwhile, I'm doing my small business owner thing with even a little time set aside for the gym. Yes, a tight schedule... but manageable...
Until the bigger kid gets sick (and generally, mine don't... knock on wood).
Then what? Who stays home? Who picks up the little guy? Forget that workout class. But what to do about the meeting scheduled 15 minutes before school is dismissed? What about the next meeting scheduled 15 minutes after school dismissal? What happens when your back-ups have scheduling conflicts? And your spouse is on a plane to some meeting who knows where?
Mad scramble. Flurry of e-mails and texts to reschedule what can be rescheduled and cancel everything else. My boys staring dolefully at me recalling "the good ol' days when moms didn't have to work..." (thanks for the guilt trip guys).
10:07. Little kid at school. Big kid resting on the couch. I'm pooped! I know a bazillion other working moms are handling stuff like this everyday. And I suppose I did too. But, geez, it's hard. Are any of those bazillion other working moms seeing this cry for help? Can you advise me - how on earth do you factor this wild card into keeping your house of cards standing?
